The aim of this task was to turn the following 2D image into a 3D product using Fusion360, Maya or any other 3D software.
Using the image above, I brainstormed a few ideas and decided upon designing a tealight holder which from plan view would illustrate the star shaped pattern. I began by making a quick initial sketch to get the ideas onto paper and noting which areas would be at a certain level. This means that from side view, the points of the star would be at different levels, almost looking like a skyline of different heights.
For the base of the product, I wanted to make it look like it was floating by filleting the bottom edge of both the wooden and glass holder. This
allowed me to get the wooden holder to look like a floating city. The centre circle is pushed 16mm down from the top to allow the tealight surface to
sit flush with the other star points as you can see in the images below.
When applying the textures ready for rendering, I decided to have mahogany as the material for the holder. I believe the rich grain structure and
distinct brown colour against the clear glass and yellow of the flame contrasted so well together compared to softwoods such as pine. Once all the
essential glass, wax and wick textures were applied, I began running some renders, tweaking the illuminance and brightness as I go along depending on
the angle.
