Third year students are required to attend a minimum of three networking events per semester. This is to enhance our social networking skills and create relations with skilled and talented individuals.
Our guest speaker for this week was Wendy Wyatt who showcased all of the projects she has been involved over the years. Unfortunately, she will no longer be contributing to further projects due to accepting a new job role, meaning some of the projects pitched were still in progress and needed someone with passion for the brief to contribute or volunteer some time to help make the project happen.
A key project that drew my attention was the renovation behind the Winchester bus station to create a youthful area constructed from containers and provide a safe area for students to meet and greet or perhaps create a stool and sell gifts/items. I believe the project did not go ahead since the council felt this was not the best use of this space; however, Wendy showed us all the benefits this area would bring to Winchester and will potentially be reviewed in the future.
Winchester Creative is a not-for-profit organisation designed to help local students connect and expand their portfolio by completing further projects for clients. The founder, Richard Coope presented Winchester Creatives and what I particularly like about this presentation over the other events, is that there was student in class who gave a brief talk about their experience with Winchester creatives, all of which was very positive. After the presentation, we networked/ made conversation with other students in the room to understand what subject they study and what they thought of Winchester Creatives. It was clear in the presentation the Richard aims to continue this service for more local students to benefit from the experience of attending Winchester Creatives.
The Wickes winter sale roadshow was an event hosted on google meets’ and showcased all the new products and services we will offer in the new year. Two new fascia’s that I look forward to designing are the Tiverton anthracite and pebble fascia’s which both look incredible and the anthracite is such a rich, warm colour when paired with brass handles. Although this event was more of a roadshow rather than a networking event, some slides showed us the new DC’s and KBA’s that have recently signed up in the Hampshire area which I may connect with on LinkedIn if I come across their profile. What I especially liked about this event was the use of quizzes to keep us engaged which contained very hard questions making it more competitive between all of the colleagues. I look forward to attending next year’s winter sale roadshow and hopefully be one of the names on the top performing DC slides.
